"Amalfi is a beautiful town in the province of Salerno and faces the Gulf of Salerno, the "Costiera Amalfitana". Amalfi was built on the towering cliffs of a deep ravine at the base of Monte Cerreto. The sharp mountain face and steep cliffs form a dramatic setting for this spectacular little gem. These images were taken while on a "Windstar" cruise of Southern Italy that began in Malta.
Amalfi was the capital of a maritime republic known as the Duchy of Amalfi. Built on trade and gold currency, Amalfi was an important and powerful city state in the Mediterranean between 839 to 1200.
In the 1920s and 30s, Amalfi was a popular holiday destination for the British upper class and aristocracy. Today Amalfi, along with with Positano and Ravello are important tourist destinations. Amalfi was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
