The Acropolis and Parthenon represent the height of Greek civilization and symbolize the very beginnings of Western civilization. The Parthenon was built under the direction of Pericles, the political leader of Athens in the 5th century BC. Constructed between 447 and 438 BC, its sculptural decoration was completed in 432 BC. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
Arriving in Athens aboard the "Crown Princess" we docked in the Port of Piraeus. We walked from the dock to the train station and took the train to the Acropolis. They charge a small fee to enter the site. The Acropolis is one of the most iconic architectural and historical sites in the world. We only had one day in port and it was very busy, but it was not to be missed! Princess Cruises offer a variety of tours to the site!
The "Elgin Marbles" - The sculptures that decorated the pediment of the Parthenon were looted by Thomas Bruce, the 7th Earl of Elgin in 1801 to 1812 . They were later sold to the British Government and now reside in the British Museum! Hopefully one day they will be returned to Greece, their rightful home!
