Images of Canyonlands National Park

Canyonlands was built by erosion, sedimentation and deposition over millions of years. What began as a shallow sea became a rolling plain. 20 million years ago pressures deep within the Earth pushed the Colorado Plateau up by 10,000 feet. Water began to erode the soft sandstone creating the landscape we see today. The Green and Colorado Rivers continue this process and are still at work today!

Canyonlands was designated a national park by President Lyndon Johnson on September 12, 1964. Canyonlands National Park is large, covering 527 Square miles. Moab is close to both Canyonlands and Arches and is the best place to stay. Tour companies located in town can provide any number of options.

Canyonlands is a popular recreation area. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, mountain biking and four-wheeling. The Green and Colorado Rivers offer rafting and kayaking. Power boat tours are available, as well as white water rafting!.....A float is a great way to view the canyon.
