Images of Corfu

These images were taken on a Princess Cruise of the Mediterranean aboard the "Grand Princess". We docked in Corfu to visit the Greek Orthodox Monastery of Paleokastritsa. The 12th century monastery sits atop a rocky promontory surrounded by a forest of olive and cypress trees overlooking the Ionian Sea.

The coastline is remarkable in it's beauty. Jagged rocky cliffs covered with a variety of lush verdant green pine cascade down into a sea of brilliant, crystal clear aquamarine. The coast is dotted with white sandy beaches and tiny coves which create a natural harbor and shelter for a myriad of aquatic sports.

It is believed that here in Ionia, Homer composed his epic poem the "Odyssey" near the end of the 8th century BC. In the poem Odysseus leaves from the Bay of Palaiokastritsa to begin his journey.
