Dunrobin Castle is located in Sutherland in the Highlands and overlooks the Dornoch Firth. Dunrobin is the ancestral home of the Earl of Sutherland and Clan Sutherland. The Castle and grounds are beautiful. The castle is thought to be named after Robert, the 6th Earl of Sutherland.
During the Jacobite Rising of 1745, Clan Sutherland supported the British government. The Jacobites under Charles Edward Stuart stormed Dunrobin Castle. The 17th Earl of Sutherland narrowly escaped capture.
Dunrobin Castle was remodelled by Sir Charles Barry between 1835 to 1850 in the Scottish Baronial style for the 2nd Duke of Sutherland. Barry was the architect for the Palace of Westminster, home to the House of Commons. The 14th-century tower, and the 17th-century and 18th-century extensions, were retained, and survive within Barry's 19th-century work.
