Images of Dunvegan Castle

Located on the Isle of Skye, Dunvegan Castle is the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland and has been the stronghold and ancestral home of the Chiefs of the Clan MacLeod for 800 years. A walled fortification was built by Norsemen in the 13th century. In 1350, a castle was constructed within the fortifed wall by Malcolm MacLeod. The Castle sits on a scenic bluff overlooking Loch Dunvegan and is surrounded by beautiful manicured grounds and gardens in a park like setting.

The MacLeod and MacDonald Clans were enemies during the Jacobite Uprising. After the Battle of Culloden, the Jacobite Rising failed and "Bonnie Prince Charlie" took refuge on the Island of Benbecula. Flora MacDonald helped Charles escape disguised as her maid. Evading Clan MacLeod, Charles sailed aboard the French frigate L'Heureux from Loch nan Uamh in Lochaber and returned to France. His dream of restoring the Stuarts to the crown of England ended and Charles remained in exile for the rest of his life.
