Durham is located in Northeast England. A beautiful medieval town with narrow winding streets, surrounded by bucolic green pastures and picturesque farmland. Durham Cathedral and Castle were strategically located on a hill above the river Wear. Both were designated World Heritage Sites in 1986.
Originally Dun Holm, "Dun" Celtic for hill fort and "Holme" Old Norse for island, a fortress has stood here for centuries. In 995 AD the Monks of Lindisfarne built a church to house the remains of St Cuthbert. Cuthbert is the first Celtic Saint of the early Northumbrian Church and is interred in Durham Cathedral.
Durham Castle was built by the Normans in 1072 under the orders of William the Conqueror. The Castle was strategically important to defend against local rebellion and Scottish and Danish invasion.
The Durham Cathedral was used in the first two Harry Potter films to represent Hogwarts.
