Durness, an isolated and fairly uninhabited area, can be accessed by the A838. Comprised of 800 square miles of moor and lochs, surrounded by towering rock cliffs, it is a rare and beautiful place.
Here the headlands of Scotland face the North Sea and the promontory of Cape Wrath the Atlantic Ocean. The Kyle of Durness divides the cape from the mainland and has beautiful sandy beaches.
The landscape is stunningly beautiful, the strength and power of the land is palpable. Not having to drive made this part of our coach tour extremely rewarding. Being able to sit up high and quietly observe the passing scenery was great. Seeing this magnificent area was an intense moving experience.
Although the name "Duirinish" appears to be Gaelic , it's meaning is uncertain. Dorrain, means "storm or tempest", and nis, a "promontory" seem quite appropriate for this
vast, wild and remote place.
