Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland is located on the southern shore of the river Forth. After Glasgow it is the second most populous city in Scotland. Edinburgh is home to the Scottish Parliament and the Holyrood Palace, the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland.

The city is famous for the Edinburgh International Festival, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and the Fringe, the largest arts and performance festival in the world.

Popular tourist sites include the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, the Scottish National Gallery and St. Giles Cathedral. Edinburgh's Old Town and New Town were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1999.

The University of Edinburgh was founded in 1582. Alumni of the university include naturalist Charles Darwin, philosopher David Hume, inventor Alexander Graham Bell and the authors Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Robert Louis Stevenson, J.M. Barrie and Sir Walter Scott.
