Images of Eilean Donan Castle

Eilean Donan Castle truly represents the romantic and dreamlike vision that visitors have of Scotland. The Castle sits on a small island at the convergence of Loch Alsh and Loch Duich at the mouth of Loch Long. Surrounded by the mountains of Kintail with the Isle of Skye off in the distance it is very beautiful.

The castle was founded in the thirteenth century, and became a stronghold of Clan Mackenzie. In the early eighteenth century the Mackenzies' involvement in the Jacobite rebellions led in 1719 to the castle's destruction by government ships.

The castle as it appears today was reconstructed in 1912 to 1932 by Lt. Col John MacRae-Gilstrap. Using much of the ruins he rebuilt the castle and added the bridge creating the iconic image we see today.
