Glen Coe is a beautiful valley in the highlands of northern Argyll. The deep sloped glen was carved by glaciers during the ice age. The beauty of this valley belies the tragic history of the Massacre of Glen Coe. It was here in 13 February 1692 that the Campbells, after accepting the hospitality of their hosts, set upon and murdered thirty-eight members of Clan MacDonald, including the head of the clan, Alastair Maclain.
The MacDonlds took up the Jacobite cause, retreating after being defeated at the Battle of Dunkeld, looted and stole cattle from Robert Campbell of Glenlyon. After taking the throne of Scotland, William of Orange offered a pardon to all Highland clans for their participation in the Rising. Due to circumstances, Alastair Maclain signed the document late and Campbell used this as an excuse to settle this old score.
The blood feud between the Campbell and MacDonald Clans colors the history of the Highlands. A82 runs through the very heart of Glencoe and is the best way to view this majestic and historic valley.
