The Glenfinnan Monument was erected in 1815 at Loch Shiel as a memorial to the Jacobite Uprising. It was here that "Bonnie Prince Charlie" proclaimed the throne of Great Britain rightfully belonged to his family, the Stuarts. The raising of the Prince's Standard took place here on 19 August, 1745.

On 16 April 1746, the Jacobite forces of Charles Edward Stuart fought loyalist troops commanded by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland on Drumossie Moor. The Battle of Culloden lasted less than an hour. After a "Highland Charge" failed the Government troops drove the "Jacobites" from the field. Facing Red Coats, Royalist Artillery and Cavalry between 1,500 and 2,000 Jacobites were killed or wounded.

Bonnie Prince Charlie realizing all was lost fled the battlefield persued by government forces. A £30,000 reward was offered for his capture. Charles made his way to the Outer Hebrides landing in Benbecula. He took refuge in the moors and although he recieved aid in his escape he was never betrayed for the reward. Eventually he sailed to France and remained in exile for the rest of his life.
