Images of Hartlepool

Hartlepool located on the Northeast coast of England was established in the 7th Century around the Abbey of Hartlepool. St Hilda took charge of the monestery located on the Hartlepool Headland in 648 AD. St Hilda was later to become the First Abbess of the Whitby Monastery. She died in 680 AD.

The Knights of the "Norman" de Brus family were given land that became County Durham in return for service to William the Conqueror. They established the port of Hartlepool and built the Parish Church of St Hilda. Construction of the church began in the 12th Century and it was built in the Gothic Style.

In the 1800's a rail system brought coal to the port. By 1830 major ironworks were established and by 1870 vast shipyards and docks made Hartlepool a major port city. Hartlepool was attacked by Germany in the First World War on 16 December 1914. The decline in heavy industry after World War II resulted in high unemployment. Beginning in 1990, investment and redevelopment have greatly improved the area.
