Lake Powell was created when the Glen Canyon Dam, completed September 13, 1963, flooded the Glen Canyon. The site was named the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in 1972. The reservoir is named for explorer John Wesley Powell, the American Civil War veteran who explored the river in 1869.

The Colorado River carved through the Colorado Plateau along what is now the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument forming Glen Canyon. The reservoir provides water for the States of Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and California.

Roughly 3 million people visit Lake Powell each year. The best way to see Lake Powell is by boat. Houseboat rentals are available. In recent years the water level has fallen substantially. Many of the narrow walled canyons and connecting routes are no longer accessible.

Hopefully the drought conditions will improve and full access to this magnificent area will be restored.
