The Montana Territories were admitted to the Union on November 8, 1889. Montana was the 41st State to join the Union. Although Montana is the 4th largest state in land mass, it has one of the smallest populations, coming in at 44th place.
The economy is primarily based on agriculture, and ranching. It has abundant natural resources including oil, gas, coal, hard rock mining and lumber. Tourism is now the fastest-growing sector. Millions of tourists visit Glacier National Park, the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, and Yellowstone National Park each year. The state is a paradise for the outdoor sportsman.
