Images of Monument Valley

Western movie fans will recognize the towering sandstone buttes of Monument Valley by the films of director John Ford and actor John Wayne. Part of the Colorado Plateau, the sandstone formations were carved over millions of years by the actions of wind and water. Located in Utah and Arizona, Monument Valley is sacred to the Native American people and lies within the Navajo Nation Reservation.

The Valley Drive takes you into the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. Admission is $20.00 per vehicle. You can choose self drive or a guided tour. If you want to take pictures self drive is best. There are places to stop, get out and walk around. The tour bus is an open truck-bed and is hot and dusty.

We stayed in Gouldings Lodge. Set in a dramatic cliffside location it overlooks the valley, nice rooms, pool and restaurant. *Option, the View Hotel is in the Navajo Tribal Park on a bluff overlooking Monument Valley. The view is fantastic. The hotel and trading post are owned and operated by the Navajo Nation.
