Images of Oban

Oban in Scottish Gaelic means "Little Bay". Oban is a beautiful resort town that lies on a hillside overlooking the Firth of Lorn. The bay is protected by the island of Kerrera. Ferry service is provided to the nearby islands of Mull, Lismore, Colonsay, Coll, Tiree, Barra and the Southern Hebrides.

This area has been inhabited by humans since mesolithic times. Dunollie Castle stands on a promontary overlooking the main entrance to the bay and has been fortified since the Bronze age.

The Oban distillery was built by the brothers John and Hugh Stevenson. Whisky has been produced on the site since 1794. The distillation of whisky actually predates the town. The Oban distillery has only two pot stills, making it one of the smallest in Scotland.
