"The history of Rhodes dates back to the Bronze Age Minoan Civlization in the 16th century BC. The Colossus of Rhodes considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World was erected here in 292 BC. It was completed in 280 BC and destroyed in an earthquake in 224 BC.

In 1309, the island was occupied by forces of the Knights Hospitaller. They constructed the Palace of the Grand Master in the 14th century. The Order, dedicated to St John the Baptist, provided care for pilgrims coming to the Holy Land. After the Christian conquest of Jerusalem in 1099 the Knights were charged with the defence of the Holy Land. In 1522, Suleiman the Magnificent, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, laid seige to the city and forced the Knights to surrender. The remaining forces were allowed to safely withdraw to the Island of Malta.

The city was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988. This was a 12 day Princess Cruise of Italy and the Greek Islands. Venice to Rome aboard the Crown Princess.
