The Ring of Brodgar is a Neolithic henge and stone circle on Stromness, the largest island in Orkney, Scotland. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Heart of Neolithic Orkney.
The Ring of Brodgar contains a henge and stone circle. The ring of stones stands on a small isthmus between the Lochs of Stenness and Harray. The site is the northernmost example of a circle henge in Britain. It is generally thought to have been erected between 2500 BC and 2000 BC.
The stone circle is 104 metres (341 ft) in diameter, and is the third largest in the British Isles. The ring originally comprised up to 60 stones, of which only 27 remained standing at the end of the 20th century.
Skara Brae is a stone-built Neolithic settlement, located on the Bay of Skaill on the west coast of Orkney. It consists of eight earthen mound homes, and was occupied from roughly 3180 BC–2500 BC. The most complete Neolithic village, Skara Brae is older than Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids, it has been called the "Scottish Pompeii" because of its excellent preservation.
