Images of Rome

The history of Rome begins all the way back to the Iron Age in the 8th century BC. Known as the Eternal City, people have inhabited this area for over 2,700 years. By 509 BC, Rome became a republic and controlled the entire Italian peninsula. By the 1st century BC, Rome had conquered Spain, North Africa and Greece. By this time Rome was considered to be the Caput Mundi or the head of the world.

Rome was a Republic. In 44 BC, General Julius Caesar declared himself Emperor. Angry members of the Senate stabbed him to death on March 15, known as the "Ides of March" in the Curia of Pompey.

Rome has everything for the tourist. All of the sites, architecture and history you have read about are within easy walking distance. Great food, wine and friendly people. We have been here many times and are constantly amazed. *Tip: you will do a lot of walking, so buy a bottle of water, as you drink it, you can re-fill it at any of the fountains and "nasoni" throughout the city. The water is potable and tastes great. *Note: If you can't drink the water, it will be clearly marked "non-potable"!     "Salute.....cent'anno!"
