Images of Santorini

Santorini is what is left of the largest volcanic eruption in recorded history. It occurred 3600 years ago and left a large caldera surrounded by volcanic ash deposits hundreds of metres deep. The eruption led to the collapse of the Minoan civilization on the island of Crete. Many believe the eruption is the source of the Legend of Atlantis.

Today white-washed houses cling to the steep volcanic cliffs of what now remains of the island. Visually stunning the island is a testament to the determination of the Greek people. It is no wonder they were able to bring civilization to the rest of the world.

This visit was aboard the Crown Princess 12 days out of Venice on our way to Civitavecchia, the Port of Rome. Images of the ship appear at the end of the sideshow. Blue skies and water surrounded by a crescent of red volcanic cliffs that rise 1000 feet above the water is a sight not to be missed.
