St. Rule brought the remains of the apostle Andrew here in 376 AD. St Rule's church and tower were built to house the relics of the saint. Over time St Andrews developed into a major religious community.
St. Andrews Cathedral built in 1158, became the centre of the Catholic Church in Scotland. The church withstood a partial collapse in 1270 and fire in 1378, but was unable to withstand the edicts of the Scottish reformation in 1559. When the Catholic mass was banned the cathedral was abandoned. In the sixteenth century the central tower gave way collapsing the north wall. The ill-fated Cathedral lies in ruins today.
St. Andrews is known as the home of golf. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club was founded in 1754 and the famous coarse is host to The Open Championship. St. Andrews is also home to the University of St Andrews, the oldest in Scotland.
