Images of St. Andrews Cathedral

In 700 AD, St Andrews was the center of large Pict community called Kilrymont. This area has been inhabited since 10,000 BC. Bones of the Apostle St Andrew are believed to have been brought here by St Regulus from Patras, Greece. The Picts supported Christianity having been converted by missionaries.

The Pict King Oengus I built a monastery to house the relics. As word of the Saints Relics spread, St Andrews grew in prestige, attracting worshippers from Scotland and Europe. Construction of St Andrews Cathedral began in 1158. St Andrews became the religious center of the Catholic Church in Scotland.

All of it ended during the Scottish Reformation. Scotland outlawed the Catholic Mass. In 1559 a Protestant mob sacked St Andrews. What was once the largest and most important church in Scotland's history fell into decline by 1561 and now lies in ruins. Try to imagine what once stood here by the Sea.
