St Giles was founded in 1124 by King David I and dedicated to St Giles, Patron Saint of Edinburgh. The early Christian church was established by Irish Monks. These missionaries represented Rome and their teachings reflected those of the Catholic church. Scotland, while struggling for independence from England, began to chaff at the perceived interference of Papal authority from the Roman Catholic Church.

In 1320, the Scots signed a letter to the Pope, known as the Declaration of Arbroath declaring their independence from England. This began a struggle over political and religious freedom and the outside influence of the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland and England. This was the start of the Reformation.

John Knox was an ordained Catholic priest. Disillusioned by corruption in the Catholic Church and inluenced by John Calvin, he converted to Protestantism in 1540. Known for his powerful fiery sermons, Knox was chosen as minister of St Giles in 1559. Knox became the leader of the Scottish Reformation.
In 1560 the Scottish Parliament declared Scotland a Protestant country abolishing papal authority.
