Flag of St. Martin
Images of the St. Martin

The original inhabitants of the island were Arawak Indians who came to the island for the large salt deposits. The island, discovered by Columbus was named after St. Martin of Tours. French and Dutch settlers both claimed the island. The Treaty of Concordia partitioned the island on March 23, 1648.

The images displayed here were taken at Grand Case, Anse Marcel and Marigot on the French side of the island. Don't miss the French restaurants along the Boulevard de Grand Case in Grand Case and those around Port Royal in Marigot, they are "magnifique".

In 1995 we stayed in the Simpson Bay Hotel when the Category 4 Hurricane "Luis" struck the island. The airport was shut down for safety. The slow moving storm with sustained winds of up to 135 mph passed within 15 miles of St. Martin battering the island for 11 hours. Our hotel had the only working generator, refrigeration and phone service. Many anxious tourists borrowed our phone to call home!
