In June 1314, Stirling Castle, occupied by the English was under siege by the Scots. It was here that Robert the Bruce defeated Edward II at the Battle of Bannockburn. England recognized the independence of the Kingdom of Scotland, signing the Treaty of Edinburgh-Northhampton in 1398.
