Images of Ullapool

The picturesque fishing village of Ullapool lies on the east shore of Loch Broom. Ullapool was founded in 1788 as a herring port by the British Fisheries Society and was designed by Thomas Telford.

Ullapool is a hikers paradise. There are a variety of walks available including mountains, rocky coasts and inland footpaths with some of the finest summits in the north west Highlands. Ullapool is considered a gateway to the Northern Highlands. The Western Isles, Stornoway and Lewis in the Outer Hebrides are just a short ferry ride away.

The geology of the Highlands is absolutely breathtaking. It was here in Ullapool, that observation of folded layers of rock, led Arthur Holmes and others to speculate about the forces required to deform solid rock. In his "Principles of Physical Geology"-1943, Holmes proposed that slow moving convection currents in the Earth's mantle created 'continental drift'. The concept today known as plate tectonics.
