Zion Canyon began as a shallow sea 250 million years ago. Erosion and sedimentation deposited over 10,000 feet of silt and sand known as the Navajo Formation. The sea became a swamp and over the millenia a desert. Massive sand dunes covered the land. Over millions of years the Colorado Plateau was thrust upwards. Erosion by the Virgin River created the landscape we see today. The Colorado Plateau tilted as it was thrust upwards, the colorful rock formations that remain are known as the Grand Staircase.
The United States Congress established Zion National Park on November 19, 1919. Zion National Park is one of the most visited national parks in the country with over 3.6 million visitors in 2015. Zion is located in Washington County, Utah.
Springdale, the southern entrance to the park, is located off Interstate 15. Springdale is the place to stay with great hotels and restaurants! There is camping and RV Parking. Supplies can be had at the "Market", near the entrance to the park. Parking is limited, the shuttles are the best way to get around!
